‘Media’s concerns on NA body’s recommendations to be addressed’
ISLAMABAD: The media’s concerns on the recommendations proposed by the National Assembly standing committee will be addressed, Information and Broadcasting Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Tuesday.
"These recommendations have been prepared by the NA committee concerned and the Information Ministry has nothing to do with it. I am with the media and stand by it. We will resolve the matter through consultation with members of the committee," he said, while reiterating the government's resolve to ensure an independent media and freedom of expression.
The minister was addressing a seminar organised by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists at the National Press Club. The seminar – ‘Worst Democracy Better Than the Best Dictatorship’ – had been organised to condemn the decisions taken by former president Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007.
Kaira said the country’s media was free and should remain free as it had been a policy of the Pakistan People’s Party and the party would continue following it to safeguard media’s freedom.
He said the PPP had always supported a free media and freedom of expression and would continue supporting it. Kaira appreciated the media for educating the masses on important issues and playing a constructive role in making the country stable and strong. app
